Marseille is the second largest city in France, after Paris, with its 853 000 inhabitants. The Old Port, Notre Dame de la Garde, the Vieille Charité... The city counts many sites loved by tourists.

Thanks to its heritage and profusion of art-dedicated monuments and events, Marseille was named capital of European culture in 2013.

Marseille is France's largest city on the Mediterranean coast and its largest commercial port. It's also the capital of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and of Bouches du Rhône department.

With its beaches, history, architecture and culture (24 museums and 42 theatres), Marseille is one of the most visited cities in France, with 4.1 million visitors in 2012.

Marseille has its own and unique culture. You can visite its important opera house, historical and maritime museums, five art galleries and numerous cinemas, clubs, bars and restaurants.

Marseille also has a large number of theatres, including la Criée, le Gymnase and the Théâtre Toursky. The arts centre La Friche is also a very well-known place, famous for the originality of its artists. The Alcazar, which was until the 1960s a well known music-hall and variety theatre, has recently been completely changed and now houses the central municipal library.

Marseille has been the birthplace and home of many French writers and poets, including Victor Gélu, Valère Bernard, Pierre Bertas, Edmond Rostand and André Roussin. The small port of l'Estaque on the far end of the Bay of Marseille became a favourite haunt for artists, including Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Georges Braque and Raoul Dufy.
